Puritan's Pride Berberine 500 mg / 60 Capsules ผลิตภัณฑ์เสริมอาหาร Berberine เป็นอัลคาลอยด์ซึ่งเป็นสารประกอบอินทรีย์ที่พบได้ตามธรรมชาติในรากของพืช เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของแนวทางปฏิบัติด้านสุขภาพแบบดั้งเดิมในเอเชียมานานแล้ว ช่วยส่งเสริมสุขภาพหัวใจและหลอดเลือด ป้องกันการเกิดโรคหัวใจ การศึกษาพบว่า การให้รับประทาน Berberine ช่วยลดความเสี่ยงการเกิดภาวะหัวใจล้มเหลว(Heart failure) ภาวะหัวใจขาดเลือดจากกล้ามเนื้อหัวใจเต้นผิดจังหวะ โดย Berberine ช่วยเกี่ยวกับสุขภาพหัวใจ ดังนี้ คือ ลดการเกิด Free fatty acid ซึ่งสามารถลดไขมันได้ทั้ง Triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol และ Total cholesterol เพิ่ม Nitric Oxide (NO) ให้ระบบไหลเวียนเลือดในร่างกาย ซึ่งส่งผลให้หลอดเลือดขยายตัว ทำให้หัวใจสูบฉีดเลือดไปเลี้ยงร่างกายได้ง่ายขึ้น ความดันโลหิตจึงลดลง และยังควบคุมไม่ให้เกิดก้อนเลือด ที่อาจทำให้เกิดการอุดตันของเส้นเลือดสมอง หัวใจ และเส้นเลือดแข็ง(Artherosclerosis) Berberine ยังช่วยลดระดับน้ำตาลในเลือด จากการศึกษาพบว่า Berberine สามารถลดทั้งระดับน้ำตาล(Blood glucose) และระดับน้ำตาลสะสม (Hemoglobin A1c) ซึ่งการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบกับยา Metformin ยารักษาโรคเบาหวานชนิดที่ 2 พบว่า Berberine มีประสิทธิภาพเกือบเทียบเท่ากับ Metformin เลยทีเดียว ดังนั้น ตามที่กล่าวมาทั้งหมดนี้ จะเป็นตัวช่วยป้องกันไม่ให้เกิดโรคหัวใจ Berberine มีฤทธิ์ต้านการอักเสบ จากการศึกษาพบว่า Berberine ช่วยยับยั้ง prtein1(AP-1) ซึ่งเป็นสารอักเสบและสารก่อมะเร็ง นอกจากนี้ยังหยุดการเปลี่ยนแปลงของเม็ดเลือดขาว Lymphocyte โดยไปมีผลต่อการสังเคราะห์ DNA ของ Lymphocyte นี้ ซึ่งเป็นสาเหตุของกระบวนการอักเสบ และยังช่วยการหายของแผลเร็วขึ้น โดยการไปยับยั้งสารอักเสบ Arachidonic acid, Thrombohexane A2 และ Thrombus formation ในตัว Berberine พบว่าสามารถเพิ่มนอร์อิพิเนพฟริน (Norepinephrine) และ เซโรโทนิน (Serotonin) ในสมอง ช่วยป้องกันการเกิดโรคซึมเศร้า(Antidepression) และยังพบว่าสามารถป้องกันโรคอัลไซเมอร์(Alzheimer’s) ได้อีกด้วย โดยการยับยั้งการเกิด β-amyloids pathways ได้
รักษาอาการท้องเสียจากการติดเชื้อแบคทีเรีย Vibrio cholera และ Escherichia coli โดยลดการฝังตัวของเชื้อบริเวณผิวผนังลำไส้ ซึ่งเป็นขั้นตอนแรกของกระบวนการติดเชื้อ ทำให้เชื้อหยุดการเจริญ จึงลดการบีบรัดตัวของลำไส้และ ลดการขับออกของน้ำและเกลือแร่ เป็นต้น
