Puritan's Pride Milk Thistle Standardized 250 mg (Silymarin) / 100 Capsules ผลิตภัณฑ์เสริมอาหาร Milk Thistle ตัวนี้ ถือว่ามีความเข้มข้นสูง มีสารสำคัญคือ Silymarin ซึ่งมันจะประกอบด้วยสาร Flavanolignans หลายชนิด เช่น Silybin Silychristin และ Silydianin เป็นต้น ใช้เมล็ดในการรักษาอาการดีซ่าน อาการผิดปกติของตับและน้ำดี ตับอักเสบและโรคริดสีดวงทวาร จากหลักฐานทางคลินิกพบว่า สารสกัดจาก Milk Thistle ที่มีองค์ประกอบหลักเป็น Silymarin สามารถรักษาโรคตับอักเสบได้ โดยที่ Silymarin มีฤทธิ์ต้านอนุมูลอิสระ และมีฤทธิ์ในการป้องกันตับ ดังรายละเอียดต่อไปนี้
1. ฤทธิ์ต้านอนุมูลอิสระ
1.1 Silybin และ Silydianin สามารถยับยั้งการสร้าง Superoxide และ Hydrogen peroxide ในเม็ดเลือดขาว
1.2 Silybin ช่วยเสริมฤทธิ์ในการขจัดอนุมูลอิสระของเอ็นไซม์ Superoxide dismutase และ Glutathione peroxidase ในเม็ดเลือดแดง
2. เพิ่มปริมาณ Glutathione ซึ่ง Glutathione เป็นสารที่ร่างกายสร้างขึ้นเพื่อช่วยขจัดสารพิษ
3. ฤทธิ์ในการควบคุมการซึมผ่านของเซลล์เมมเบรนและเพิ่มความคงทนของเซลล์ต่อการบาดเจ็บจากภายนอก
4. ฤทธิ์ในการเพิ่มการสังเคราะห์ Ribosomal RNA และ โปรตีน ทำให้เกิดการสร้างเซลล์ใหม่
5. ฤทธิ์ต้านอาการอักเสบ Silybin Silychristin และ Silydianin สามารถยับยั้งการสร้าง Prostaglandins (ศึกษาในหลอดทดลอง)
6. ฤทธิ์ในการปกป้องตับจากสารพิษ พบว่าสารสกัดจาก Milk Thistle ที่มีสาร flavanolignans เป็นองค์ประกอบหลัก สามารถลดความเป็นพิษต่อเซลล์ของ Carbon tetrachloride และ Galactosamine (ศึกษาในหลอดทดลอง)
นอกจากนี้การทดลองในสัตว์ยังพบว่า Silymarin และ Silybin ยังสามารถปกป้องตับจากการได้รับสาร Ethanol, Paracetamol, Lanthanides, FV3 virus, โลหะหนัก และ Thioacetamide นอกจากนี้ Silymarin ยังสามารถใช้ในการป้องกันและรักษาในกรณีที่ได้รับเห็ดพิษบางชนิด เช่น Amanita phalloides โดยป้องกันไม่ให้สารพิษจากเห็ดจับกับเซลล์ตับ และป้องกันการแทรกซึมผ่านของสารพิษสู่เซลล์ตับ และยังพบว่า Silymarin สามารถป้องกันตับถูกทำลายจากเชื้อ Plasmodium berghei ได้
การทดลองในคนสุขภาพดีเมื่อให้รับประทานผลิตภัณฑ์ Silymarin 3 ชนิดพบว่าประมาณ 20-50 % ของ Silymarin สามารถดูดซึมเข้าสู่ร่างกาย และประมาณ 80 % จะขับออกทางน้ำดี นอกจากนี้พบว่าสารกลุ่ม Flavanolignans จะสะสมอยู่ที่ตับและน้ำดี
